To scale

How big was it?

Gallimimus: 6m longA double-decker bus: 11m longA grown-up lying down: 1.8m tall

The bars are drawn to the same scale. On these pages the animals are sized in proportion to each other as far as a screen allows: the giants are shrunk a little and the smallest are enlarged, so that you can see them all.

Good to know

Six things about the gallimimus

Fast

One of the fastest dinosaurs

With its long legs it may have reached 30 miles an hour or more.

Ostrich

An ostrich dinosaur

It belongs to a group called the ostrich mimics, which were built very like today's big running birds.

Beak

No teeth

Its beak was toothless. Comb-like ridges inside may have strained food from water.

Eyes

Eyes on the sides

Its large eyes faced sideways, giving a wide view to watch for danger.

Fuzz

Feathered

Relatives have been found with feathers, including wing-like plumes on the arms of adults.

Herd

Safety in a flock

Related dinosaurs have been found in groups, young and old together.

Dinner

What it ate

Probably plants, seeds, insects and small animals.
