To scale

How big was it?

Styracosaurus: 5.5m longA grown-up lying down: 1.8m tallA pet cat: 50cm long

The bars are drawn to the same scale. On these pages the animals are sized in proportion to each other as far as a screen allows: the giants are shrunk a little and the smallest are enlarged, so that you can see them all.

Good to know

Six things about the styracosaurus

Crown

A crown of spikes

Four to six long spikes stuck out from the edge of its frill.

Nose

A horn half a metre long

It had one tall horn on its nose, and only small bumps over its eyes.

Show

For show

The spikes pointed backwards and outwards, so they were probably for display.

Herd

It lived in herds

A bone bed in Canada holds the remains of many that died together.

Beak

A beak and shears

Like Triceratops, it had a beak at the front and slicing teeth at the back.

Small

Smaller than Triceratops

It was about the size of a large rhinoceros.

Dinner

What it ate

Low plants such as ferns, cycads and palms.

Evidence
