Good to know

Six things about the Jurassic

When

201 to 145 million years ago

The Jurassic is the middle period of the age of dinosaurs.

Land

The continents split

Pangaea began to break apart, and seas flooded in between the pieces.

Wet

Warm and wet

The climate was warm and damp, and forests of conifers, ferns and cycads spread.

Big

Why so big?

Huge size was a defence. A full-grown long-neck was too big for any hunter to tackle.

Sea

Britain was under water

Much of Britain lay under a warm, shallow sea full of sea reptiles and ammonites.

Birds

The first birds

By the end of the Jurassic, small feathered dinosaurs had taken to the air.

The age of giants

All six of these lived in the same place at the same time. Their bones lie together in the rocks of the Morrison Formation, across the American West.
