Sea reptiles
While dinosaurs ruled the land, other reptiles ruled the sea. Ichthyosaurs were shaped like dolphins, plesiosaurs rowed with four flippers, and mosasaurs were giant swimming lizards. All of them breathed air and had to come to the surface.
How to tell
What makes a sea reptile
01 Air breathers They had lungs, not gills, and came up to breathe as whales do.
02 Flippers Their legs had become paddles.
03 Live young Many gave birth in the water and never came ashore.
